Get in the seasonal spirit in the morning with this feel-good breakfast. Make as needed, or – as I do – mix up a big batch of the dry stuff for a zero-effort breakfast on busy mornings.
The mix also makes an unusual and inexpensive homemade gift. Wrap up a pretty bag or jar of the prepared dry mix and give alongside a bottle of quality maple syrup.
To make a big batch, ignore the first half of the recipe and scroll down to the bottom for instructions.

Ingredients – To Feed 2
100g porridge oats
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp ground allspice
1/4 tsp ground ginger
Pinch ground cloves
1/8 tsp salt
Handful of raisins
2 cups water
1 tbsp brown sugar
Splash of milk
To serve: maple syrup
Method:
Combine oats, spices, salt, raisins and water in a saucepan. Bring to a bubble then reduce the heat and cook, stirring often, until thickened. Add the sugar and splash in the milk – half a cup or so – then pop on the lid and let stand for a couple minutes. Ladle into bowls and serve with a drizzle of maple syrup.
For a big batch:
Combine 400g porridge oats, 2 tsp cinnamon, 1 tsp each ground allspice and ginger, 1/8 tsp ground cloves, 1/2 tsp salt, 1 cup raisins and 4 tbsp brown sugar.
To cook: To a saucepan, add 1/2 cup of the mix per person. For every 1/2 cup of the mix add 1 cup of water. Cook until thickened, stirring often. Splash in a little milk, then serve with a drizzle of maple syrup.
